Everyone Has a Capability Stack
The Capability Stack CIC is a Community Interest Company focused on helping adults overcome barriers to employment, self-employment, and wider economic participation.
We believe that people do not always struggle to progress because they lack ability, motivation, or ambition. Sometimes the difficulty lies in finding the right environment, opportunity, or way of demonstrating what they can do.
Our approach starts with the individual rather than a predefined pathway. We recognise that every person brings a unique combination of skills, experience, strengths, interests, working preferences, and potential. We call this their capability stack. Our role is to help people understand that stack, recognise its value, and identify ways in which it can be developed and applied.
A Different Way of Looking at Capability
Traditional employment pathways often focus on what an individual needs to improve before they are considered ready for work. We believe it is equally important to understand what is already there.
- Someone may have excellent technical ability but lack confidence in interviews.
- Someone else may be highly creative but struggle with conventional recruitment processes.
- Another person may have strong interpersonal skills but has never had an opportunity to demonstrate them in a workplace setting.
These aren’t limitations in capability. They simply mean that the right environment, support, or opportunity has not yet been found.
Our Purpose
The Capability Stack CIC exists to create practical opportunities for people to develop, demonstrate, and apply their capabilities. We aim to:
- Support Participation: Enable inclusive, sustainable routes into employment and enterprise.
- Recognize Strengths: Help individuals understand, value, and communicate what they bring to the table.
- Build Practical Capabilities: Develop workplace confidence and communication through creative, low-anxiety workshops and real-world rehearsal.
- Create Practical Experience: Host community activities, events, and short work placements at local community hubs to turn capability into tangible experience.
- Connect & Match: Link individuals with complementary partners, supportive networks, and relevant opportunities.
Our focus is on sustainable, long-term outcomes rather than progression for its own sake.
Why “The Capability Stack”?
We chose the idea of a capability stack because capability isn’t a single skill or qualification. It is the dynamic combination of everything a person brings with them:
Skills + Experience + Strengths + Interests + Working Style + Support + Opportunity
Different people have different combinations. Some capabilities may already be highly developed; others may need strengthening. Some opportunities only become possible when complementary capabilities are brought together—such as pairing a skilled practical specialist with an administrative partner in a supported micro-enterprise.
We help people see that combination as something they can understand, build upon, and take pride in.
A Community Interest Company
The Capability Stack CIC operates strictly for community benefit. We work collaboratively with local councils, community organisations, businesses, referral partners, and specialist advisers to create opportunities that might not otherwise exist.
Our work is grounded in the belief that people should have spaces to contribute, develop, and demonstrate what they are capable of on their own terms.
Capability is more than a qualification. It’s what happens when skills, experience, strengths, and opportunity come together.
